Will an SSD Upgrade Make an Older iMac Faster?
July 11, 2026
A MacBook battery is a consumable component. Its ability to hold a charge gradually reduces as it ages and completes more charging cycles. This does not necessarily mean that the MacBook itself has reached the end of its useful life.
In many cases, replacing a worn battery can restore the portability and reliability that made the MacBook useful in the first place.
Here are five common signs that your MacBook battery may need professional attention.
1. The Battery Runs Down Much Faster Than Before
One of the first signs of battery wear is noticeably shorter running time.
A MacBook that previously lasted most of the working day may begin needing a charger after only an hour or two. Battery life will always vary according to screen brightness, applications, video calls, connected devices and workload, but a major unexplained reduction should not be ignored.
Before assuming that the battery is faulty, check whether a particular application is using excessive energy. You can also restart the MacBook and install available software updates.
When the battery continues draining unusually quickly during normal use, its usable capacity may have deteriorated.
Apple explains that a normal Mac laptop battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity when it reaches its maximum expected cycle count under normal operating conditions. Actual battery life and ageing vary according to usage and charging conditions.
2. macOS Displays “Service Recommended”
Your MacBook can report information about the battery’s condition.
Open:
Apple menu → System Settings → Battery
Depending on the MacBook and macOS version, you may see a battery health or condition status.
A Service Recommended message means that the battery holds less charge than it did when new or that it is not functioning normally. The MacBook may still work, but the warning is a good reason to arrange an assessment.
Do not rely only on the warning message. A technician should also consider charging behaviour, battery capacity, physical condition and whether the charging circuit is operating correctly.
3. The MacBook Switches Off Unexpectedly
Unexpected shutdowns can have several causes, including software faults, overheating, logic-board problems and battery failure.
Battery-related shutdowns often happen when:
- The displayed charge percentage is still above zero
- The MacBook switches off as soon as the charger is removed
- The charge percentage suddenly drops
- The computer struggles under heavier workloads
- The MacBook restarts after the charger is connected
A correct diagnosis is important because replacing the battery will not solve a charging-port or logic-board fault.
At We Fix Macs SA, we assess the battery and charging system before recommending replacement.
4. The Battery Percentage Behaves Unusually
A healthy battery percentage should generally decline in a predictable way.
Possible warning signs include:
- Remaining on one percentage for a long time and then dropping suddenly
- Jumping from a low percentage to a much higher figure after charging
- Showing 100% but running down very quickly
- Refusing to charge beyond a certain percentage
- Alternating between charging and not charging
Some modern MacBooks use battery-health management and optimised charging features. These can intentionally delay or limit charging under certain conditions to reduce battery ageing.
That behaviour is not automatically a fault. However, erratic percentages combined with short battery life or shutdowns should be investigated.
5. The Trackpad, Keyboard or Bottom Casing Is Lifting
A battery sits beneath the top case of many MacBook models. When a battery becomes physically swollen, it can place pressure on the trackpad, keyboard or bottom cover.
Possible physical symptoms include:
- A trackpad that is difficult to click
- A gap around the bottom cover
- The MacBook no longer sitting flat
- A raised keyboard or palm-rest area
- Screws or casing appearing to move out of position
Do not press the casing closed, puncture the battery or continue charging a visibly distorted MacBook.
Switch it off, disconnect the charger and arrange a professional assessment promptly.
How to Check Your MacBook Battery Cycle Count
A cycle count is the number of complete charge cycles used by the battery. One cycle does not necessarily mean one individual charge. Several partial discharges can add up to one complete cycle.
To check it:
- Hold the Option key.
- Click the Apple menu.
- Select System Information.
- Choose Power under Hardware.
- Look for Cycle Count and Condition.
Apple provides model-specific maximum cycle-count information, but cycle count is only one part of the diagnosis. A battery may develop problems before reaching its expected maximum, while another may remain usable after reaching it.
Should You Replace the Battery or the MacBook?
Battery replacement can make sense when:
- The MacBook still performs well
- The screen, keyboard and logic board are in good condition
- The Mac supports the applications you need
- The cost is reasonable compared with replacement
- You mainly need better portability and reliable battery life
A replacement Mac may make more sense when the device has several expensive faults, cannot run the software you require or no longer receives a suitable version of macOS.
A professional assessment helps you compare the repair cost with the age and value of the MacBook.
MacBook Battery Replacement in Pretoria
We Fix Macs SA provides battery assessments and replacements for supported MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models.
Send us:
- The MacBook model
- The serial number
- A photograph of any visible swelling
- The battery condition message
- A description of the charging problem
We will confirm whether the battery, charger, charging port or another component is the likely cause.
